If you’ve been recording yourself over and over but still can’t seem to fix certain pronunciation problems, you may not need better listening, but simply need to use a mirror instead.
While you can certainly improve your pronunciation by listening more carefully, it’s only half the story. Some speech movements are much easier to correct with your eyes than with your ears, and a growing body of research suggests that visual feedback plays a much larger role in pronunciation learning than many people realize.
In other words, sometimes your eyes can teach your mouth what your ears can’t.
Why Your Ears Sometimes Miss the Problem
One of the biggest obstacles in accent training is that you’ve spent years listening to your own pronunciation. Your brain has become accustomed to the way you produce certain sounds and quietly labels them as “correct,” even when native speakers hear something different.
That’s why listening to recordings of yourself doesn’t always reveal the problem. You’re asking the same ears that approved the sound in the first place to judge it objectively. Instead, you need another source of information.
Your Face Gives Away More Than You Think
Some pronunciation errors are remarkably visible. Just take the difference between /s/ and /ʃ/ (“sh”). As we’ve previously discussed, when you say sip, your lips stay fairly relaxed. But when you say ship, your lips should round slightly and move forward.
Unless you are aware of it, you might never make this small lip movement. Their ears don’t notice it, but a mirror does immediately. The same principle applies to many other sounds.
TH sounds
Words like think and this require the tongue tip to appear briefly between the teeth. If your tongue never becomes visible, there’s a good chance you’re replacing th with t, d, s, or z. But one glance in the mirror can reveal the problem instantly.
Jaw height
Compare these two words:
- bad
- bed
Many non-native speakers produce nearly the same jaw opening for both vowels, but the vowel in bad requires a noticeably lower jaw than bed. Instead of trying to hear the difference, watch your chin in the mirror. Once you are aware of it, the movement will be obvious to you.
Lip rounding
Both of these words require rounded lips (another topic we’ve previously discussed), but not to exactly the same degree:
- boot
- book
Again, the difference may be easier to see than hear.
What the Research Says
This isn’t just practical coaching advice, but is increasingly supported by research.
A comprehensive review published in the Journal of Second Language Pronunciation (abstract) examined studies on computer-assisted visual articulation feedback and reached an important conclusion: pronunciation learning works best when learners receive both auditory and visual feedback, instead of auditory feedback alone.
The reason is straightforward: your ears hear the result of speech, while your eyes reveal the movements that created it.
Visual information provides clues about:
- lip rounding
- jaw opening
- tongue visibility
- place of articulation
- timing of movements
These physical details create the acoustic signal you hear, but they are often impossible for untrained listeners to identify by sound alone. Ignoring visual feedback means ignoring half of the available information.
Audio and Video Work Together
Of course, listening practice is still important. For example, a mirror cannot show you:
- intonation
- rhythm
- stress
- vowel quality
- connected speech
- melody
These are all features that live primarily in the auditory world. Instead, think of pronunciation as using two complementary systems: your ears tell you what you sound like, while your eyes tell you what your mouth is doing.
The strongest improvement comes when both systems reinforce each other.
Your Eyes Can Teach Your Ears
When you practice and record your voice without any visual feedback, you will probably ask yourself, “Does this sound right?” But when you practice in front of a mirror, you should ask yourself questions like:
- Are my lips rounding?
- Is my jaw opening enough?
- Can I see my tongue?
- Does my face move differently for each sound?
Once the movements become consistent, close your eyes and repeat the same words. Then rely on muscle memory rather than vision. This combination of seeing first, then feeling, is what helps the new movement become automatic.
For sounds with visible articulatory differences, a mirror may be one of the most powerful tools to help you modify your accent.
